Retired Pakistani army commanders have provided a significant amount of support for former prime minister Imran Khan and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The Veterans of Pakistan recently conducted a protest in front of the National Press Club in Islamabad. They demanded rapid elections, the creation of a judicial commission to look into the foreign plot behind the no-confidence vote against Imran Khan, and Rana Sanaullah, the interior minister, to resign.

Currently, retired Lt Gen Zaheer-ul-Islam, a former chief of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), has pledged his support for PTI candidate Col (r) Shabbir Awan in the PP7 Rawalpindi by-elections. He can be seen speaking to a "meeting of influentials at his residence" in the photos posted on social media.

Many people questioned whether the former DG ISI Zaheer-ul-Islam had joined PTI after the images went viral. Fawad Chaudhry, however, has refuted every rumour that has been made against the former military officer.

The PTI leader claimed that the rumours on social media are untrue in an interview with a local media source. The candidate of their party, who is also a relative, just received backing from the former director general of the ISI, he said.

It should be remembered that from 2012 to 2014, Zaheer-ul-Islam led the ISI. He was charged with being the major financier of the PTI sit-in outside the legislature in 2014.
