A side-out happens in volleyball when the team who served the ball is unable to win a point on the play. As a result, the opposing team is awarded the option to serve the ball next time.

In the current iteration of the rally scoring system that is used on a global scale, there is no such thing as a "side-out" in the traditional meaning. This is due to the fact that side-outs are not permitted.

What exactly is meant by the term "side out"? And Putting Points on the Board from the Outside In

If a game of volleyball is employing the side-out scoring method, the team that is currently serving the ball is the only one that can score a point during the game. When a side-out occurs, the player who was previously serving is now the one who has the option to do so.

One of the following options could provide a way out of the situation:

if the team that did not have the serve was responsible for the ball landing in the opponent's court; if the opponent hit the ball out of bounds; if the team that was serving hit the ball into the net; if the team that was serving touched the ball more than three times; and if the team that was serving hit the ball into the net.

If the game were scored using the side-out format, the winner would be determined by which team reached 15 points first.

Rally Scoring, with a maximum of 25 points available for each game.

The side-out scoring was largely phased out in favour of the rally scoring system, which allows teams to score points regardless of whether or not they served the ball at most competitive levels. This was done in favour of the side-out scoring system, which allowed teams to score points regardless of whether or not they served the ball.

When any of the following takes place simultaneously:

The game is over when the ball touches the ground, lands somewhere other than the playing area, makes its way into the net, or is touched by a player from the same team more than three times in a succession.

With the exception of the very last game, which, in the event that it needs to go to a third game, is played until one player reaches 15 points, the other games are played until one player reaches 25 points.

Adjustments were made to the Points System.

1999 was the year that the Federation Internationals de Volleyball made the change from the side-out scoring system to the rally scoring system; the following year, in 2000, this change was deemed mandatory.

The adjustment was made in order to assist in making the duration of matches more predictable, with the intention of drawing fans and promoting broadcasting opportunities.
